Commissioning for change - towards world class services

21st Jan 2009 - Central London

In association with
Private sector providers are now actively encouraged by government to participate in the provision of primary care and are currently bidding on £1.3 billion contracts for GP-led centres. By March 2009 PCTs must have completed the first cycle of the commissioning assurance framework to measure performance in terms of health outcomes, competences and governance. This conference examines how provider innovation can be achieved in service design and delivery. Expert speakers will address the knowledge needed to create an expert commissioner and the necessary actions to remove the barriers to market participation and make commissioning really work.

Speakers will include:

  • Mike Sobanja – Chief Executive, NHS Alliance
  • Ken Anderson – Managing Director, UBS
  • Gary Belfield – Director of Commissioning, Department of Health
  • Matthew Swindells – Managing Director for Health, Tribal
  • Marilyn Simpson – Head of Social Marketing, Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust
  • Martin Green – Chief Executive, English Community Care Association
  • Conal Timoney - Managing Director MCCI, formerly Head of Communications Development, NHS London
  • Paul Mainwaring – Chair, Patients Council
  • Nick Gordon – Commercial Director, Harmoni
  • Tim Kelsey – Chairman, Dr Foster Intelligence

The introduction of world class commissioning is designed to raise procurement standards across the UK. This event explores the efficacy of these commissioning mechanisms and the outcome these changes have in terms of enabling patient choice and individualised healthcare. The programme also examines the successes and the lessons which can be learned for both commissioners and providers.

The agenda will address the following issues:
  • How will commissioning meet the healthcare challenges posed by future demand?
  • Towards a level playing field for the independent sector
  • Presenting a good business case: The view of an independent provider
  • Why are some organisations successful why others fail?
  • Improving patient and public involvement in commissioning
  • Understanding the information requirements for improved commissioning
  • Lessons from overseas commissioning
  • Will NHS commissioning be the envy of the world?
