The NHS will pay a total of £63 billion for hospitals with an original capital value of just £11 billion, the Liberal Democrats have claimed.
The party claims that the health service still owes £58 billion on 106 private finance initiative (PFI) contracts to be paid off over the next 30 years.
Lib Dem health spokesman Norman Lamb said: “These figures reveal the disastrous reality of Labour’s stewardship of the NHS.”
The Department of Health responded by pointing out the total PFI payments include other services such as cleaning, catering and maintenance as well as the original building costs.
