A new partnership between digital healthcare provider Livi and North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group, will offer almost a quarter of a million people across the Northeast of England access to a doctor online, via the NHS.

Patients are able to access digital appointments with clinicians, while staying registered to their home practice.

The partnership is the first of its kind across the NHS, under the Alternative Provider Medical Services contract framework, bringing together health commissioners, GP practices and a digital company to benefit patients.

All 25 practices within North Tyneside have entered into the contract, offering digital appointments via Livi’s app, which is available to download from the App Store and Google Play.

The app enables patients across North Tyneside to request an online video appointment with a GP, seven days a week including early mornings, evenings and weekends. Patients can also access medical advice, referrals and prescriptions all within the app, without having to de-register from their GP surgery.

Livi stated that the need for extra capacity and remote appointments in North Tyneside comes at a critical time, as the area has been significantly affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Juliet Bauer, managing director of Livi, said: “At the heart of this partnership is patient choice. Hundreds of thousands of people in the Northeast can now enjoy faster, easier and more convenient access to NHS medical professionals without having to leave their homes – but the option of going to a surgery to see a GP is still there, as it was before.

“Crucially, it adds extra capacity to the system and supports the NHS in delivering world-leading care, while keeping patients and clinicians safe. This direct arrangement with the North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group is a first for Livi and we hope to be able to replicate it in other areas of the UK in due course.”

As a CCG we are focused on effective and efficient services which will benefit our community and improve health outcomes for the residents of North Tyneside. That’s why we’re very excited to announce our new partnership with Livi, which adds an innovative new way for people to access an NHS GP at the click of a button.”

Executive nurse and chief operating officer Dr Lesley Young-Murphy, said: “This service development complements North Tyneside’s existing GP service provision and patients will remain on their GP practice list. The ‘Livi GPs’ will access and record patients’ consultations in the same GP record as their own GP, ensuring continuity of care provision. Patients can also use the app to access medical advice, referrals and prescriptions We will work closely with Healthwatch, local patient groups, GPs and Livi to evaluate the impact of this partnership on the quality of care provision and patient outcomes in North Tyneside.”
